Debutts yard

The Norfolk Southern Debutts yard is a very important part of the Norfolk Southern railroad. On any given day, there are many trains that go through the yard, and many trains that leave the yard to start their journey. Here is a quick history of the yard.

The Southern Railway first opened the Citico yard in 1955, as a modern hump yard. This means that is used gravity to sort the cars onto the trains they needed to be on. From 1955-1982, the yard continued to be a cornerstone of Chattanooga, being a key facility for the Southern Railway. In 1982, Southern Railway merged with the Norfolk and Western Railroad to create Norfolk southern. Since then, there have not been many changes to the yard, except for 2017 and 2018. In 2017, NS discontinued hump operations in the yard. 1 year later, in 2018, the railroad decided to briefly continue hump operations.
